Jean-Léon Gérôme - Diogenes - Walters 37131

Jean-Léon Gérôme, Diogenes, 1860.

Currently housed at the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, Maryland.

  1. My favorite Diogenes story is his telling Alexander to get out of his sunlight, but I can’t find any 19thC historicist paintings – seems to’ve been more popular earlier. (The ideal, I think, would be to show Alexander walking away.)

I do however like Waterhouse showing some maidens looking in on Diogenes.
