Americans to be Considered for the Booker Prize?

It seems that American authors will be eligible for the Man Booker Prize, starting in 2014. To date, the Booker Prize has been limited to English-language authors from the British Commonwealth countries, plus Ireland. The news that American authors will be in the running has elicited something of a backlash.

In fairness, it appears that the change in rules will also allow nominations for works by authors who write in English but are based in non-Commonwealth countries. (Think China, where there are some English-language authors based in Hong Kong, for example.)

Hat tip: A Little Blog of Books.

My thinking: Americans already have the Pulitzer. The powers that be should leave the Booker Prize to the Commonwealth folks.
