Matejko Stańczyk

Jan Matejko, Stańczyk, 1862. Currently hanging in the Warsaw National Museum.

Stańczyk was jester at the court of King Sigismund I of Poland. In Matejko’s painting, he is the only person at a 1514 royal ball troubled by the news that the Russians have captured Smolensk.

  1. So I’m guessing the jokes he told were Polish, by definition?

  2. I really like this painting. (E-mailing it to an art historian I know.)
